Developmental Disability WA (DDWA) is proudly celebrating 40 years of advocacy, leadership and community with the release of a new anniversary booklet – and it’s an incredible reflection of just how far they have come.
From its grassroots beginnings in 1985 as a network of service providers advocating for people with intellectual disability, DDWA has grown into a respected and passionate voice for people with developmental disability and their families across Western Australia. The 40th Anniversary booklet takes readers on a journey through the decades, from the institutionalised models of the early 20th century to today’s more individualised and inclusive approaches to support.
The timeline spans from the advocacy of the 1950s Parent Movement through to landmark achievements like the launch of the Local Area Coordination model, the closure of large institutions, the rise of self-advocacy, and DDWA’s vital involvement in shaping the NDIS and fighting for education, employment and housing access. Each era showcases stories of policy reform, community campaigns, and the relentless determination of communities who refused to accept inequality.
The booklet is a celebration of progress, people power, and the shared goal of building a WA where everyone has the right to live a good life, feel connected, and be heard.
Ability Heroes is proud to share this incredible milestone. Whether you’re a long-time advocate or just beginning your journey in disability rights and inclusion, this booklet is a must-read.
